Today is a pivotal day for educators throughout the state of New Mexico! The Honorable David K. Thomson ruled in favor of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation and the American Federation of Teachers, New Mexico in their request to halt the negative impacts of the “arbitrary and capricious” teacher evaluation system.
Today educators can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the test-based consequences in the teacher evaluation system have been temporarily halted throughout the state of New Mexico. We are confident that the length of the hearing gave Judge Thomson the ability to carefully examine and understand many of the complexities of PED’s evaluation plan and we look forward to another win in April.
The Albuquerque Teachers Federation and AFT New Mexico will return to Santa Fe for a full hearing in April, when the court may once and for all decide that the PED’s high-stakes, test-based evaluation system is detrimental to the teaching profession and learning environments of students throughout the state of New Mexico.
We’d like to thank our members for their support and our legal team for their outstanding representation of New Mexico’s educators.
