ATF Bill Tracker & Lobbying Information

We are in the final stretch of the 2023 Regular Legislative Session.

Thankfully, your union makes it easy to stay up to date on the progress of key legislation by sending regular updates during the session.

Now, you can see all the bills ATF is following at a glance.

The Albuquerque Teachers Federation takes stances on bills that deal with pedagogy, workers’ rights, funding for public education, and social justice. Click the link below to see our regularly updated bill tracker.

There are some very important bills moving through the legislature designed to help recruit and retain educators. There are others that will directly impact our working conditions.

These links take you straight to the bill’s page on the legislative website. You can find the bill’s location- which committee is set to hear it or whether it has advanced to the floor to be voted on by the entire chamber.

It’s imperative that ATF Members take action to contact your legislators and ask them to support these bills. You can find your legislators here.

How Can You Maximize Your Voice in the Legislature? Join the ATF COPE Committee!

The NM House and Senate vote on the education budget and education laws. This directly impacts your pay and your work with students. In New Mexico, our schools are funded by the State Equalization Guarantee (SEG). That means all the money that schools receive flows from the state government. That is why we must elect a Governor and Legislature with whom our union can work.

Your COPE committee recommends endorsements of legislative candidates to the Fed Rep Council. These candidates share our belief in public education and workers’ rights!

LOBBYING

Lobbying is the act of talking to elected officials about the merits of your position. Your goal is to influence their position through your knowledge of the issues.

Use legislators’ email addresses, phone numbers and social media accounts to express your views.

When You Contact Your Legislator(s), Here Are Some Tips on How to Talk So Your Legislator Will Listen:

  • LIMIT YOUR COMMENTS TO ONE ISSUE or one bill per message.
  • IDENTIFY WHO YOU ARE. Inform the legislator that you are an educator, union member and if applicable, a parent, grandparent, etc. Be sure to give your home address when phoning or writing.
  • REFER TO THE BILL NUMBER if possible.
  • WHAT ACTION DO YOU WANT? Tell the legislator.
  • STATE THE KEY REASONS FOR YOUR VIEWS.
  • PUT A HUMAN FACE ON THE ISSUE.

Share personal experiences and how the legislation will affect YOU, YOUR FAMILY and YOUR STUDENTS.

  • COUNTER ARGUMENTS the opposition is using if you can.
  • BE BRIEF.
  • ASK FOR A REPLY.
  • FIND SUPPORT & GET COMMITMENTS FOR ACTION. Which other legislators support your position?
  • ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO TO FURTHER SHARED GOALS.
  • SEND A THANK YOU or FOLLOW-UP EMAIL or MESSAGE when appropriate.
